P. tomentosum (Mint Geranium)

Again, a clear-cut species, known and grown in cultivation for over 300 years. The very strong mint scent and huge velvety leaves make this a favorite in any collection Garden specimens may grow to be 36 inches across, but mint geranium spreads laterally and is seldom more than 18 inches tall. It requires some shade for such a luxuriant display. The plant does well in large containers and does not demand the amount of water its size and texture would seem to require. It should be watered well when necessary, but overwatering results in yellowed leaves and soft growth.

This has been crossed with others to produce such remarkable plants as ‘Chocolate Mint’, ‘Joy Lucille’, and a decidedly upright ‘Pungent Peppermint’. The leaves of this species are used in crafts such as wreaths, and in the kitchen as a flavoring agent for pound cakes and chocolate sponges.
